Colored chalk tips

Today I'm excited to share another hair tutorial! My genius friend Caroline used chalk (yes, plain old chalk) to color the ends of her hair like a rainbow, and you could also do ombre or just your favorite color. Don't you love this sexy rocker look? Here's how to do it...

Here are Caroline's steps, and the wonderful Jamie Beck took photos:
Dying hair crazy colors is a trend that's been going strong for a while now, but what do you do if you want to have some fun, and don't want to commit to a semi-permanent dye? Here's your answer! Chalk pastels are my go-to when I want to add some fun into my hair.

1. Get yourself some hair chalk.

2. Pick your favorite color of chalk, and wet the tip of the chalk you have chosen. Then rub the end of the chalk up and down the tips of your hair, re-wetting when necessary. (You can also wet your hair instead of the chalk, but I find it easier to just re-wet the chalk when needed. You don't want your waterlog your hair, since then it will become a mushy mess.)

3. Switch colors if you want. Just go crazy. Experiment. This type of hair is meant to be fun and carefree! (For my hair, I used a combo of four colors: magenta, peach, royal blue, and turquoise.)

4. Wait for your newly colored hair to dry a little before you get dressed. You don't want to get colored dye on your party outfit. Also, don't forget to wash your hands after, you're going to get a bit messy. Don't worry, it comes off with soap and water!

Three extra tips:
* If you have lighter hair, skip wetting the chalk first and just use the chalk dry on your hair. Wetting it may stain lighter hair a bit more than darker hair. If you find that the color isn't showing up enough for you, you may want to run a flat iron over the part you just colored. The heat will help brighten and seal the color in.
* Apologies in advance for the ladies with super dark hair; you may have to sit this one out (although, you could try some bright blues and purples for a cool subdued effect).
* Don't fear that it will rub off onto your clothing once it's dry. I was wearing a white blouse when we took these photos, and I went out to dinner afterward and came home with no trace of color anywhere on me or my clothing (save for some bright pink chalk under my nails because i didn't wash my hands well enough;).

There you have it! Fun stuff! Have a good time, ladies!!!
Thank you so much, Caroline and Jamie! Would be really fun for a date, a night out with friends or a birthday party. Would you do it?

P.S. Nine hair tutorials...

(Photos by Jamie Beck for Cup of Jo. In the outdoor photos, Caroline is wearing this white shirt and these jeans in neon persimmon. Her red lipstick is Ruby Woo by MAC. Her jewelry is from her own line, Brvtvs, and will be available in early June. In the how-to photos, Caroline is wearing vintage jeans--similar ones here--and this Ikat top.)

  7. As a girl who has never had the nerve to dye her hair (except one very mis-guided fiasco in middle school) this is such a nice temporary option! Also, Caroline is gorgeous! Homegirl needs to model when not working on her jewelry.

  9. My aunt (who is a hairdresser) was just telling my 10 year old daughter about this because Madeline desperately wants to dye her hair even though she has this gorgeous chestnut color hair with red highlights. Does the chalk run off onto your clothes? I guess it's worth a try.

  22. !!! Please read up on safe use of pastels before putting them in your hair. Pastels are not considered safe to breathe in...there are small particles and potentially dangerous pigments used.

  23. This is so fun! I teach middle school and my students would freak out if I showed up with colored tips! I might just have to try it :)

  24. I've totally done this! Great post :)

@L : For a pale pink that lasts a few shampoos instead of one, try using Davines Alchemic "Red" conditioner. It's a color depositing formula meant to keep red hair bright but on my blonde hair it turns pink instead! (If you're brunette I'm not sure if it works... Has anyone else tried?)

I had pinned this hair chalking link on Pinterest a few months ago (http://www.seventeen.com/fashion/blog/hair-chalking ... yes, Seventeen magazine -- gotta love Pinterest) that has an extra step to make the chalk 'stay' -- maybe with an endorsement from Cup of Jo I'll finally have the nerve to try this for the summer! :)

  31. I can't believe it didn't rub off on the white shirt?? I have dark raven hair- pooh, guess I will sit this one out.

I'm an art teacher, and I have to agree with a previous poster, the soft pastel does have quite a bit of "dust" particles that float around. It's not particularly good to breathe in, though this looks nominal at best. I would caution all in thinking it won't rub off. Perhaps this once it didn't rub off, but soft pastel in general is very prone to rub off and stain. You might be able to set it with a light spray of hairspray.

I think there are colored hair spray that one could also use to get the ombre effect.

  44. As soon as I read this, I shut my lap top, marched over to my art supply closet, and tried this with my 2 year old. Ha, she loves it, and looks way too cool for school. It's officially our new favourite.

  45. I always skeptical of this. If you endorse doing it, I think it's probably worth trying :)

    ReplyDelete
  46. ladies, i can assure you, it did not rub off on my shirt while shooting, or while hanging out later that night. also, to those who are concerned with chalk dust, if you wet the tip of the chalk, it prevents flaking. minimal dust comes off, not really anything to be concerned about. if this project posed a health risk, i wouldn't have endorsed it. happy chalking!

And I already did this rainbow hair look. But instead of chalk I used a special product from Kevin Murphy, the Color Bug.
I think it's way more pigmented than chalk, but of course chalk is cheaper.
Have a look at my pics - I also just did the hair tips.

  58. LOVE this idea! I would totally do it. But I still can't quite believe that it's not going to rub off on your clothing (or everything else around you for that matter). How can that be? I guess I'll give it a try in grungier clothes first, just in case...

Couple of hours after I read this, I headed off to a conveniently located art store and bought myself some soft chalk pastels.

My hair is currently a dark reddish brown, and I used a turquoise color on it. I would recommend gloves. Dipping the chalk in water and coloring your hair may take a little while to get it just the way you like, and the right shade, so by the time I finished a couple of tips, almost all my fingers were blue! you seriously can't touch anything. And there is a slight dust that falls but if you rub your hair on the dust, it also turns your hair blue.

Idk how well it's suppose to dry, but if I kept touching my hair to try to untangle it, my fingers would get blue again. After this, I took a three hour nap and when I woke up the blue was gone :( So idk how temporary this chalk business is, but I can assure you, it looks sick, if only for a little while.

  69. That would be so great for temporary color and as many colors as you want. The only thing I've heard is that the chalk easily rubs on your shirt or dress. Wear the same colored shirt as the chalk you put in your hair.
