I usually wear bright red lipstick, but this fall, lips are going dark. Yesterday Toby and I walked over to the NARS store and found the prettiest color: Terre de Feu. Afterward, I felt really sexy, even in jeans and a T-shirt and with a baby on my hip.
The trick is to apply the lipstick, and then kiss it off on a tissue, so it's more of a stain; and then reapply a top coat. That way, it stays on for ages (and won't rub off if you have drinks or dinner).
Will you be wearing dark red lipstick this fall?
P.S. Dark red nails, and fall wedges...

I've noticed this too, very vampy, sultry and autumnal. I love.

vampy = perfect word!
ReplyDeleteI love the look of lipstick, but I've never been able to pull it off for some reason! Same with eyeshadow, I'll get excited about a shade, actually buy it, put it on, and wipe it off before I even leave the house.
ReplyDeletei have the nars lip crayon in Damned... oh. my. goodness. i LOVE it!
ReplyDeletei almost prefer it to regular red lips (:
I'll totally give it a go!
ReplyDeleteyes! so excited for plummy lips! one tip if you feel like a color is a little too dark or you aren't quite comfortable... use a brighter (complementary) color as the first layer and blot so that is the stain, and then use the darker color as the second layer. i find that helps me transition when i'm used to brights but want to start wearing darker lips!
ReplyDeleteI'm wearing dark red right now! I love all shades of red and have a few orange-red, bright red, and dark red. My sister goes for dark purple all the time, but I'm not brave enough yet :) xoxo
ReplyDeleteI just found a perfect red for my complexion...Clinique Dubonnet....not too orange and not too pink. It's not quite this dark though! If I had dark features, maybe, but I'm not sure it would work for a blue-eyed dirty blonde...

Red lips are always a strong statement! They scream confidence, sexyness and sophistication. It's almost a 'state of mind.' And as u well said, you don't need much more than that to feel gorgeous and sexy. That NARS color is beautiful. Will try it for sure! xoxo
ReplyDeleteyes yes yes yes yes yes yes
ReplyDeletei love bag:))
ReplyDeleteThanks for replying Jo, you've made my birthday :)

I'm so pale that I'm afraid of dark lipstick, but I think it might be one of those things I just have to go for... so, maybe!
ReplyDeleteArrggh, didn´t expect to see Gala here too, I can´t stand this woman!
ReplyDeleteNot fan of the trend either, not very flattering for the most skin colours.
Sorry for the negative comment, haha!
Oh, how fun! I'm excited for the darker reds.
ReplyDeleteI love the red lips on you! I'm not brave enough to wear the red lips yet, but maybe I'll get there eventually.

Oui, si vou plait!
ReplyDeleteThe NARS stains are the best. The first time I wore it was a hellish night at a party that was rained out. Long story short, the lipstick didn't move at all through hours of eating/drinking/talking/rain... Good stuff.
ReplyDeleteJust started wearing a light pink for fall and I love it. I feel like dark red lips would age me a bit.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous! I'll definitely be rocking this dark lip in jeans and a t-shirt with a baby on my hip.
ReplyDeleteLove love love :)
ReplyDeleteLove this! I'm getting excited for fall and for fall fashion. Thanks for the tip on how to make it stay, too -- I will try.
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to try it! What color did you try on at Nars? I'm searching for a dark hue that says "super bold" not "super goth" :)
ReplyDeletei sadly haven't found a way to pull off lipstick - it just doesn't work on me. BUT i'm already wanting to pull out the dark polishes (even though i'm in tx where it's still currently about 99 degrees outside!).

Which NARS color is that in the photo?
ReplyDeletelooks so good with your skin!

Hm. Would look great on you natural brunettes but I'm not so sure for us natural blondes! I have a feeling it would make me look a bit 90's with my coloring! Vampy is appealing though. Have been known to wear this color on my toes. :) Thoughts?
ReplyDeleteI'm not into lipstick at all. Maybe cause I live in the northwest? Less common for people under 30 to wear lipstick around here, I think.
ReplyDeletewith my skin tone, i prefer bright red lipstick. i've stayed with the same color for years. (M.A.C RED)
ReplyDeleteI don't normally wear dark read but I love it, something about it feels so 1930's glamour!
ReplyDeletei really want to try this especially as i will be rocking a baby bump which doesn't make me feel the sexiest person ever ;)
ReplyDeleteyep. must try this nars version...wonder if it looks good on indian skin tone?
ReplyDeleteI just got used to the bright red, now darker...I need to get with it!

Red lips were always one of those things I thought I could never pull off. But I stepped into the 9th Ave Sephora the other day, asked for a little help and got an hour-long lesson on red lips. The lady was so nice she even gave me samples to take home.

Jo, which shade is the one you tried? I can't tell in the picture. LOVE the trend for fall!
ReplyDeleteI have always been a fan of the red lip, in every shade it may come in.
ReplyDeleteI'm really light-featured, so I can't imagine it would look good on me. I remember in the 90's dark red lipstick was really in. It's fun to see trends return.

I love rockin' a red lip, but I think this shade might be a bit too dark for my super pale skin. Too bad, 'cause it's lovely.
ReplyDeleteyes! It is much better for my dark coloring, though I loved and still love the bright red, never could find a shade that suited me!
ReplyDeleteGosh, no! Too many 90's flashbacks.
ReplyDeleteI'm like you - I tend to wear bright red lipstick, but this is definitely a trend I'd try! :)
ReplyDeleteI love dark lips, but you have to be really careful not to go too brown, or else you look like you haven't updated your makeup since the 90s. But wait, isn't 90s stuff back in style now? Woops! ;)
ReplyDeleteWhich color did you try on in the pure matte lipstick?
ReplyDeleteMy favorite dark red is Revlon Crimson. I'm excited to hear that it'll be a trend this fall!
ReplyDeleteThis last Christmas I got an array of reds, one of the being a deep red Botanics brand gloss from Target. I put it on and dab it off- I think it's my favorite

In college in the mid-90s, dark lipstick was my go-to. Usually it was an Origins matte pencil. I just went to their website and they still have them! My husband prefers a "no makeup" look, and I need something very low-maintenance so I generally go for sheer colors these days.
ReplyDeleteNo, not for me... to me it just looks like the 90's in college when we wore Mac "Del Rio" and dressed like little trampy tartletts. I've played a bit with bright reds, but in general I'm a chapstick and eye makeup kind of girl.
ReplyDeleteYep, this is one of the trends this fall. It's important to note that wearing red lipsticks works best with more informal outfits and dark red goes wonderful with leather. I'll be writing a post on how to make your lipstick last longer pretty soon so check it out!
ReplyDeleteI'm totally going to rock it! I love fall colours, well Fall in general!!!
ReplyDeleteJo, I hope you share which color you tried....I am also a very fair skinned brunette with blue eyes and am hoping you could steer me in the right directions!
ReplyDeleteYES. I wish I could go to Sephora right this second.
ReplyDeleteNah, not a fan. Although a girl I worked with once wore a dark colour - sort of a mix of red wine/burnt brown/medium plum - and it really suited her.
ReplyDeleteIt balances the fine line between vampy and 1990's.
you better believe i'm on the red lips boat! i had braces last year (yay adult braces....) and told myself when i got them off that my reward was to go to Mac and have them pick out red lipstick for me. MAGIC. i had no idea i could rock it but they picked just the right color!
ReplyDeletei like wearing bright red, bright pink, and bright orange, but for some reason this intimidates me. suddenly i am tempted to try it.
ReplyDeleteIt is winter here and yes, I am wearing red. Although not such a dark red as the Terre du Fue which I love ! I have been wearing a Chanel red that looks best of blondes with no tan :)
ReplyDeletebesos..
Love her lip color - but more than that - LOVE her oversized/envelope clutch!! Where can I get one of those?
ReplyDeleteI did dark lipstick last winter and loved it although it took some guts for a girl who thinks neutral is a colour!!! But I think it looks so good on other people!!! And I'll keep trying.
ReplyDeletei may have to test this before wearing out. why does dark lipstick always scare me?
ReplyDeleteThe model looks so pretty, preppy and chic. As much as I adore the look, I just worry that my lips are too thin for dark red lipstick. :(

ReplyDeletetotes! I actually bought a dark red lipstick last year - NARS' "Fire Down Below." My husband actually picked it out (hilarious) while I was trying to find ONE orangey red that wouldn't look like really boring coral on me (they all looked really terrible on me). I don't wear lipstick a lot, though. I want to wear it more, but it's intimidating: I have a big mouth (I get a lot of Julia Roberts comparisons) and full lips, so when I do a bold lip it's, well, a LOT of colour on my face.
ReplyDeleteHi Joanna,
ReplyDeleteI'm a long time reader, and I adore your blog. All your advice and style tips feel like they are coming from a cool older sister.
I have a question about trying on lipstick. How can you tell what color is going to look good with your skin tone before you buy it? I've recently tried to get into lipsticks, but when I went into Sephoria to try some, the saleswoman only dabbed the colors on my hand. I know this is supposed to test the lipstick color with your skin color, but I felt I still couldn't get the idea of what the color would look like on my lips! Does the NARS store or any other stores you know of let you try samples? I'm also very pale (and proud! :) so I feel like I am more apprehensive about selecting a bold color--and spending upwards of $20!--without making sure it works with my fair complexion.
Any tips?
xo
Hi everyone, I got into the red lipstick trend (and it works with my skin tone) but I was told by a friend that a young woman shouldn't wear bright or dark red lipstick in a professional setting--only in the evening. Is this true?
ReplyDeletedoes that trick really work? i'm so excited to try it!
ReplyDeletethanks.

I am in love with dark red lips, reminds me on how I used to do my makeup when I loved in NYC! Great post, brings back so many memories!

OMG Yes. This is a trend I'm SO down for.
ReplyDeleteThis makes me so happy. I've always been a dark red lip and/or dark red nail kind of girl and now it's finally "the thing" haha
ReplyDeleteHave always loved red lips. Just scored a L'oreal True Red on clearance for $2 at the grocery store, no less! Any tips on preventing the bleed-out for us over 40 gals?
ReplyDeleteI have always loved this color for lips. That Nars color is fab. This will be a near-future splurge for sure.
ReplyDeleteI always apply this color for my lips. Its so attractive too.

Wow nice pic!You looks so cool in that dress..Template Design
ReplyDeleteI usually stick to bright reds too but I hope I'm brave enough to try dark red this Autumn it looks gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteGala!!!
ReplyDeleteI dabbled in this trend last year and bought several shades, and this year I feel more confident. I just have a problem with buying so many. :)I used to search for the perfect red, now it's the perfect dark.
ReplyDeleteBackpack ergo baby carrier is available in several sizes including those designed for carrying grown children. Some come with padded straps, ergobaby others with metal frames, or may have head rests ergo baby carrier sale or sunshades. The larger ones could be a bit heavy and with a grown child in it, it is not something suitable for a frail mom, or a dad with a not ergo baby very strong back.
ReplyDeletei love the lipstick color and how it blends in with the outfit!
ReplyDeleteYes, I so LOVE Red Lipstick. Bring on this fall trend!
ReplyDeleteThat clutch is perfect! (As is that sweater, really...)
ReplyDeleteAnd I just got into my new colour: a light coral. And I don't do lip colours easily so we'll have to see. I do like it in that photo, however.
I completely thought the woman in the first pic was Gwyneth Paltrow...was trying to place the movie all AM until I realized these are real folks from your party.

I have fair skin, so I tend to stay more on the lighter side, but I just picked up M.A.C. Rebel lipstick and Oversexed lipgloss to wear for the fall and I've received so many compliments!
