Last week I wrote about our seven favorite activities for toddlers in New York. But I forgot one!
Washington Square Park (Greenwich Village). At this historic park, you'll find old guys playing chess, two great playgrounds, and a giant fountain that you can wade in on hot summer days (apparently, it's perfectly clean, and kids flip out over it). But Toby's favorite part is the street musicians dotting every path, from jazz quartets to guitar players to pianists. If you work up an appetite, just head half a block south to Peanut Butter & Co., and don't forget your camera: The iconic arch makes a great backdrop for family photos.
Have you ever been? xoxo (We took this photo there!)
P.S. A secret playground, and the rest of the NYC Guide.

i LOVE that area! p.s... if you like chinese mexican food (i.e. mexican food made by ALL chinese/some-sort-of-asian people.. i've only found this to be common in NYC), there's a great burrito shop across the street from peanut butter & co. too! stumbled upon it a year or so ago and learned about my new love for chinese mexican food :P
ReplyDeleteLove seeing another kid being raised in the city! I'm raising my 2 in the city of Vancouver.
ReplyDeleteGreat place to eat and drink just 1 block south on MacDougal - La Lanterna. They serve thin crust pizza and lots of other casual food, cocktails, lots and lots of coffee drinks, desserts. A great place to linger and catch up with old friends. Very cozy in the winter and awesome for dates.
ReplyDeleteWe're bringing our kids to NYC for the (their) first time this Fall; I know they're going to love Washington Square Park!
ReplyDeleteAdorable shots of Toby playing in the water. Babies seem to love water until it's in a bath tub!
ReplyDeleteGreat article about how clean the fountain is! I'm sure someone will still come and complain that you're letting Toby play in filthy water :)
How fun! I love that first photo! :)

That's where my husband asked me to marry him! We were walking through the city trying to get to our dinner reservation on time, and he suggested we go into the park. I thought he was crazy since we were in such a rush, but then he got down on one knee. WSP will always have a special place in our hearts!
ReplyDeleteAnd the NYPLibrary, Jo! I would be over the moon if my children and I could hang in that amazing landmark every week.

My 15 month old son (Tucker) just started walking so we are all about new activities to do with him now that hes mobile! (Means good sensible JCrew loafers for mom to chase him in now too! so long Jimmy Choos)

Thank you! Love your blog!
ReplyDeletewe LOVE Washington Square Park and yes, that fountain is totally clean! At least compared to some of the other parks. At Pier 25 the water portion has been flooded for days and the water just doesn't look clean. They chlorinate the fountain. it's awesome. I took these photos there a few years ago...http://www.ciaochessa.com/2009/06/urban-summer.html
ReplyDeleteHoping to make it there before school starts. I took my kids to the transit museum and Pier 6 last week. They loved it. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteOh, I hope this could come in handy for us once. :)
ReplyDeleteI love NYC, I need to back so bad.
ReplyDeleteLast time i went it was during the winter, so I think going in the Summer would be ideal for next time. It looks fantastic in these photos!
we took our daughter to nyc when she was two, and spent a month just traipsing around the city. we never lacked options to keep her entertained - there was something new every day, and yes, washington square park was one of them! gorgeous photos jo, and they brought our trip back xx
ReplyDeleteWe JUST got back from New York International Gift Fair with our little guy in tow! We will have to check out these places on our next visit. Our little explorer is sure to love them.
ReplyDeleteAnd Third Rail Coffee next to Peanut Butter & Co! My fave coffee place in the Village.
ReplyDeleteIf you are around without kids - try for a walk-in at Babbo at 5pm when they open (4:30 on Sundays). I even got in last Friday at 5!
NYC really is a secret gem for little ones--so much to do and look at! So glad you're finding the best of things for your little man and you to do!
ReplyDeleteOh the memories... I used to spend so many summer days in Washington Square Park. I sang under the arch with a little doo wop group, and followed the street performers around like a little groupie. I don't think that fountain was ever turned on when I lived there. Next trip back, I'll take my kids and share a totally different experience.
ReplyDeleteI have to come back to your city. Have been there 3 times and still not enough. have good one. http://www.rainforest-cz.com/
ReplyDeleteWe live in Brooklyn but make the occasional trip to Washington Square Park, we love it so much! We call these "sandbox days" and we begin in Union Square with a trip to the greenmarket for juice and scones, which we eat on the playground, near the sandbox. From there we walk down the Washington Square Park to visit the sandbox, run through the sprinklers and sometimes, check out the little kids playground with the bouncy animals. Afterwards we look for deals at Clementine Consignment and then lunch. Most recently we walked to Bareburger (also suggested by another reader) and had an awesome lunch before doing some Soho stuff. NYC kids really have it made, huh?
ReplyDeleteThis is definitely one of my favorite places in the City. It's so beautiful!
ReplyDeleteAww Joanna! I saw your little dude just the other day coming out of the park in his stroller, chirping away to himself. Too creepy to say hi to a baby I don't actually know, but he looked exhausted and happy after a big afternoon in the park!
ReplyDeleteCertainly one of my happy places in NYC to bring your kids. Yummy food, random entertainers, dogs frolicking around - you can even get in the fountain!
