The Loneliest Planet

The Loneliest Planet is a new movie featuring an engaged couple—played by Gael Garcia Bernal and Hani Furstenberg—backpacking through Georgia's Caucasus Mountains. The synopsis: "The couple hires a local guide...Walking for hours, they trade anecdotes, play games to pass the time of moving through space. And then, a momentary misstep, a gesture that takes only two or three seconds, a gesture that’s over almost as soon as it begins...Once it is done, it threatens to undo everything the couple believed about each other and about themselves."

Fascinating, right? Will you see it? It's the first movie I've been really excited about for ages; it opens tomorrow and will be on demand on October 30th.

  15. I love Gael Garcia Bernal in the motorcyle diaries! This looks really intriguing. I'm so curious to find out what the moment is. I hate scary movies though and I couldn't figure out from the trailer whether it was supposed to actually be scary or not..

    1. From what I read, it doesn't sound like a scary movie. The gesture is so simple but huge. It seems like it will be more about the effect on their relationship than trying to scare people. I couldn't resist and read the spoiler . . .

  38. Has anyone read the book "Little Bee?" This trailer kind of reminds me of that story - how one "incident" that happened while the couple was traveling out of the country completely changed their marriage forever.

  42. I did a bit of sleuthing and it looks like it'll be a scary movie. I like movies w. happy endings and by the sound of the short story it's based on, not sure there will be one.

  55. (Don't worry, there are no spoilers in this comment!)

The "gesture" that they keep referring to made me go "Eeeek!" and get huge eyes. It's something so simple, but it TOTALLY changes everything for this couple, and you will definitely understand why when you see it.

    1. I had to go read a spoiler as soon as I watched this. And wow. Really, just wow. The "gesture" is so small and so simple, like you said, but I think it'll strike a chord with everyone who watches the movie.

  61. Very intriguing! The director's first film, Day Night Day Night has some missteps, but is absolutely memorable and this looks like it will be too.

  62. My comment doesn't contain any spoilers, but I have a question for those of you that have seen it/read the spoiler.

Will watching the movie make me not want to go backpacking in the mountains? I know a lot of people have said it isn't scary, but I also don't want to be deterred from any future adventures that I might plan. The setting is so unique, that I'm led to believe there is something integral to the plot that is specific to being isolated in the wilderness or being in a foreign country or something like that.

So is that the case, or could this gesture-or-incident-or-whatever occur anytime, anyplace?

    1. Yes, it could. Don't worry - it won't deter you from a backpacking adventure at all :)

  63. It's true, that idea of mental furniture. My husband is a priest, and when he visits the very elderly, often they can't remember a lot of things and sometimes can't even have a conversation, but when he sings an old hymn with them or performs the liturgy, they sing or speak along, bc thay memorized it so long ago, and in that moment, they are so happy and aware, and communing with this other human being for a little while.cheap prom dresses

  64. Oh my, this was a terrible movie. My manfellow and I just watched it. Boo. The cinematography was wonderful, but the storyline was a bit slow. And honestly, I thought the redhead was being such a girl. Humans are human; we all have snap reactions, regardless of gender. Fantastic scenery though. I surely want to backpack through those mountains!

  65. bought tix for tuesday, but sandy had other plans for IFC :( hopefully IFC will let me transfer my tix to another date! i really want to see it!

  66. I don't even know what to think about this film. It totally was a conversation starter, but did it really need to take 1 hour and 50 minutes for that one moment? Nothing else happened!

    ReplyDelete
  67. I watched it upon your recommendation (I love your taste) and it was awful! I'm actually only halfway through on Netflix streaming right now and I'm not sure I can force myself to finish it. Painfully boring. Don't waste your time. I'm past the "pivotal moment" already too and imo, it's overblown.
